Art is such a wonderful part of our curriculum. It gives the students a chance to be creative and to express themselves in various ways with various materials. Here are some examples of what we have done so far in the school year in grade one. Many of our projects integrate other subject areas. September started with a look at Fall. We focused on nature and fall colours. We did leaf rubbings from leaves we had collected on our Fall nature walk. Science activities centred around hands-on activities with primary and secondary colours. We did a "Corn Syrup Squish" using corn syrup and food colouring, each student created a unique picture. "Mouse Paint" was about colour mixing using the three primary colours: red, yellow and blue to make the three secondary colours: green, orange and purple. We also enjoyed doing other seasonal activities like "Paper Bag Turkies" for Thanksgiving and "Paint Blowing" activities with pop-up bats for Halloween. We hope you enjoy viewing some of the samples shown here, we have enjoyed making them! (view photos)
To end our Colour Unit in science Mrs. de Waal and Miss Schwartzenberger gather "ingredients" like "Lizard Spit", "Blue from the Sea", and "Ground Dragon Bones" to make a magic potion. The "magic" is in the colour mixing and what we end up with is a secondary colour "potion" surprise! (view photos)
We did a unit on Apples. We learned the stages of how and when apples grow. We got to have an "Apple Tasting" and decide which apple was our favourite. We graphed the results. It turns out that 1S is especially fond of Granny Smith Apples! We had a special treat in that we also tasted Crab Apples donated to us by Mrs. Fraser. She has a Crab apple tree in her back yard. They were sweet and sour, very yummy! 1S and 1d followed a recipe to make Apple Sauce. With the help of parent volunteers we cut apples, cooked them on the stove, watching the progress as it turned from crispy apples to sweet apple sauce. The students couldn't wait to try it. After it cooled we had a chance to taste the final product and we were pleasantly surprised to find that almost everyone loved it. For some students it was their first taste of Apple Sauce.
